What is/was the motivation for the project?

Our project addresses the urgent need for environmental education and sustainability through an integrated, hands-on approach using the STEAM methodology. It focuses on raising awareness of global and local environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, encouraging students to develop a deep understanding of these challenges. The transformation of school hallways into green oases improves indoor air quality and student well-being, creating an environmentally-conscious, sustainable learning environment. The creation of a “Nature Classroom” provides direct engagement with the natural environment, enhancing students’ connection to sustainability. The project fosters sustainable habits such as resource conservation and waste reduction at school and home, while equipping students with problem-solving skills. Through STEAM, students explore environmental issues through science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, making learning more engaging.

How is/was the project financed?

Being a STEAM school, we receive from the Community of Madrid 1000 eur annually and being a eco-school our city council help us with some materials and labor. We use and recycle all type of materials

What are the (planned) results?

Our project promotes environmental education and sustainability through a hands-on STEAM approach. It raises awareness of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss while fostering sustainable habits like resource conservation and waste reduction. Transforming hallways into green spaces improves air quality and student well-being, while the “Nature Classroom” strengthens their connection to sustainability. Students play an active role in biodiversity initiatives, including pollinator workshops, the “Oasis Cervantes,” and insect hotels. Through STEAM, they develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and leadership, empowering them as changemakers in their school and community.

How comprehensively were the ideas, desires, and demands of the students integrated into the initiative?

The project is student-centered, ensuring active participation in all stages. Students contributed through discussions, surveys, and an eco-audit, identifying key areas for biodiversity improvement. Their interests shaped activities such as pollinator workshops, the “Oasis Cervantes,” and insect hotels. They take on active roles, teaching younger peers, creating educational materials, and maintaining green spaces. Continuous evaluation allows for student-led adaptations, fostering leadership and responsibility. This engagement enhances sustainability awareness, hands-on STEAM skills, and empowers students as changemakers within their community.
