A New Pergola for BRG 6 Marchettigasse

In May 2026, a new pergola was constructed in the school courtyard of our partner school BRG 6 Marchettigasse  in Vienna.

The project was implemented as part of the Green Cool Schools GROW Europe project and was inspired by the Building Instructions  developed within the project. The planning process began during the winter months, when students and teachers worked together to collect ideas, develop a concept and create the first design sketches. Inspired by the triangular pergola presented in the project materials, the school decided to build a slightly modified version adapted to its own needs. The aim was to create an attractive outdoor space around the chessboard already painted on the schoolyard. The pergola will provide shade, create new seating opportunities and contribute to a greener and more pleasant school environment.

At the end of May, the wooden structure was built together with the team of Ralf Dopheide. During a hands-on workshop, students worked in small groups and actively participated in the construction process. They drilled and screwed the wooden elements together, lined the planting boxes and filled them with soil. Their enthusiasm and commitment played an important role in the successful implementation of the project.

One week later, a planting workshop was organised. Students planted the first climbing plants, including Crimson Glory Vine (Vitis coignetiae), Variegated Kiwi Vine (Actinidia kolomikta), Kiwi (Actinidia chinensis) and Chocolate Vine (Akebia quinata). Over the coming years, these plants will gradually cover the pergola, providing shade, improving the microclimate and creating valuable habitats for insects.

We are delighted that this ambitious greening project has been successfully realised. The new pergola will enrich the school grounds for many years to come and provide students with an attractive outdoor space for learning, relaxing and spending time together.
