Grass sod pile composting

Sometimes you may need to remove grass sods grass with roots and attached soil when creating a wildflower meadow or carrying out other landscaping projects. Because sods are living with roots and soil, they do not decompose quickly in a regular compost system and may continue to grow if not treated correctly.
Steps:
- Choose a shady spot to prevent the sods from drying out.
- Stack the sods into a neat pile: Grass side down, Roots facing up
- Shape the pile into a mound.
- Dampen the sods with water as you pile them.
- Cover the mound with black plastic to exclude light.
- The lack of light combined with the upside-down stacking will cause the grass to die.
- Leave the pile for approximately one year.
- After a year, uncover the pile and dig through it.
- The sod should have decomposed into dark, rich loam.
- Check for any persistent tap roots from perennial weeds (e.g., dandelions) and remove them.
