The Project
Although the school courtyard had been improved with a new wooden deck years ago, there was only a single plant (a rhododendron). The plan was to make the courtyard greener by setting up planting bags and raised beds for students. The careful selection of plants should improve the microclimate in the courtyard. And the children had the opportunity to sow seeds, plant, and pot plants in order to reconnect with nature.
The motivation for redesigning the courtyard came from the students. Although many students used the courtyard during breaks, many felt that it looked like a prison yard. As a result, the courtyard was often very loud and chaotic. It could hardly be used as an “outdoor learning space” because there was no shade at all. In addition, biology lessons increasingly showed that children lack a natural connection to nature, even though they are very willing to get involved in gardening activities.
At first, only one class was responsible for planting and maintaining the courtyard. Later, partner classes from the primary school were invited to help planting and. Students from other classes also joined in, for example when watering or weeding. At the beginning, the watering service during the summer holidays was shared by only four people and was very demanding. This year, it worked much easier, and the school caretaking team also took over the watering duties. At the children’s request, a small outdoor water supply was installed. Now it is delightful to see that the fauna has also increased. A pair of birds built a nest in the clematis. By now, we can hardly imagine the courtyard without any greenery.
More details
Unfortunately, there is little to no financial support for the implementation of the project. Some parts were funded through the “Ökolog” program and the school budget. The main funding came from personal sponsorship by the teachers.
So far, we have achieved noticeable improvements in the courtyard’s appearance and usability. The space is now more inviting, quieter, and far more suitable as an outdoor learning area. Students are more engaged with nature and show greater interest in gardening activities. We expect that, over time, this will foster a stronger connection to the environment, encourage collaborative learning, and promote a sense of responsibility and care for the natural surroundings.
Initially, one class was mainly responsible for the project. This class included both deaf pupils and a child who uses a wheelchair. Subsequently, children from other classes also repeatedly took part and were happy to help with watering and planting duties. The cooperative classes (older pupils help younger ones’) also participated with enthusiasm. The greening of the area was well maintained by all pupils. The joy of helping and working grew, and more suggestions for improvements were contributed. The courtyard is now used more effectively, both as a learning space and as a place for breaks.

Es trägt nicht nur zur Verschönerung bei, denn auch die Kräuter werden in der Schulküche verwendet.

Ein nachhaltiges Projekt, das den Schulinnenhof deutlich aufwertet. 🙂
